This project was made during my time at the Royal College of Art. I used the colleges facilities to create a studio self portrait series and darkroom to create this installation. I explored this connection primarily through my mother’s clothes in these self portraits, alongside a film originating in my family’s archive. Through superimposing myself in the place of my mother in both a neutral and influenced space, I invite the viewer to reflect on their own parental relationships. THE DRESS is an ongoing project that began in 2019. It’s pretty self-explanatory - each person is in the same dress, posed however they’d like, with the image composed in a similar fashion, all taken on the same camera. What’s come from this so far is a greater conversation about gender and identity as well as a snapshot of chapters in Malindi’s life through her friends. THE DRESS, Volume I, is the first print installment of the work, capturing the first 5 years of this portrait project. 42 color images, 52 pages total. Self published. Calico is Malindi’s first self-published edition made in 2018. The body of work focuses on the urban landscape with its angular patterns and natural collages. The book pinpoints the symmetries of manmade structures in contrast with the natural beauty of the nature that filters through the lines. Includes 52 pages, 42 black and white 35mm images, and 3 original poems. Self published, printed and perfect bound at Edition One, Richmond, CA. Sold for $30.
